The artistic director of Chanel, Karl Lagerfeld, announced on Monday that he is planning his own chain of hotels. The first hotel will be a six-star and will be opened in 2018 in Macau, the Chinese Mecca of gambling.
The German fashion designer is collaborating with the Parisian palace Le Crillon and the Metropole from Monaco, who has ‘the pleasure to announce the expansion of their activity by creating an international hotel brand which will carry his name’, suggested a press release on Monday.
The creative director is not the first fashion designer who is launching in the hotel industry. He will follow the footsteps of Armani and Versace, who opened their own hotel chains as well.
According to president and CEO of the Karl Lagerfeld Group Pier Paolo Righi, the first hotel is set to open in Macau – a former Portuguese colony, which passed under the Chinese domination in 1999 – is scheduled to open in 2018.
At the request of AFP, the group explained that the project was initiated in 2014, following a proposal received from the company based in Macao.
The upcoming luxury resort will become a part of the Lisboa Palace Complex, an area financed and managed by a gambling center from Macau. The area will include casinos, restaurants, and other touristic attractions. The resort will include 2,000 rooms, including a Versace palace.
According to AFP, this hotel brand launch is a first for Karl Lagerfeld, who worked in the past with several hotel brands without putting his name on the frontispiece.
