The scientists set the alert for the volcano located in the Aleutian islands of Alaska at an extreme level after an explosion was detected a couple of days ago on the top of the mountain.
The explosion and the smoke cloud was noticed by the residents of the small town of Nikolski, located 72 kilometers away from the volcano.
The alert level for the Cleveland volcano, a 1,730 meters tall mountain peak, located on the Chuginadak Island, at about 1504 kilometers southwest of Anchorage, was switched from yellow to orange by the Volcanic Observatory in Alaska.
The orange code is the second most alarming from the scale and is issued when a volcano is manifesting signs of ‘anxiety’ or ‘potential risk of eruption’, according to the Volcanic Observatory.
The red code is issued when the eruption is imminent.
According to Reuters, a group of researchers said that the cloudy weather obscured Cleveland’s peak and the satellite images were not very clear. However, there was no evidence of an eruption cloud.
The volcano was named after one of the American presidents, Grover Cleveland and is one of the most active volcanoes from Alaska. According to the experts, the ashes that expelled with the eruption might represent a serious threat air traffic.
Earlier this year, the Pavlof volcano erupted on the peninsula blowing a jet of ash, which measured about 6096 meters high.
The Alaska Volcano Observatory is a U.S. research center, founded by the Geological Survey.
