Tragedy: Five European diplomats died during a plane crash in Malta

A small plane which carried a group of European officials from the Frontex border control service crashed Monday, shortly after taking off from Malta.


At least five people lost their lives writes Reuters, citing sources from the airport and witnesses who saw the entire horror scene.


The impact took place at 05.30 local times. Official sources stated that the aircraft was headed towards Misrata, Libya. The rescuers are still searching for survivors.


The plane, a turboprop Metroliner with two engines, has the capacity to carry 10 passengers.


According to The Times of Malta newspaper, the aircraft was leased in Luxembourg especially for the Frontex officials. The nationality of the victims is not yet known.
