NASA created an amazing menu using vegetables grown on Mars. The special dishes were served during a social gala.
The menu was entirely cooked with vegetables and plants cultivated in giant simulators meant to recreate the living conditions of Mars. To celebrate the success, NASA organized a special dinner, in which they served four different dishes, including carrot ice cream and potato soup.
The cultures were grown in a greenhouse created by a group of specialists from the Wageningen University.
The experts managed to successfully grow tomatoes, potatoes, and peas. During the process, the experts used a special fertilizer mixed with soil to simulate conditions on Mars. However, the amount of heavy metals present in the soil collected from Mars were at a much lower level than the maximum allowed.
Also, the representatives of NASA believe that fruits and vegetables grown on the Red Planet are safe for human consumption. The dinner was organized for the persons who donated money for the project.
Since 2013, a group of researchers from Holland managed to develop ten different varieties of soils on a field similar to the one from Mars. Some of them are not quite safe for the human consumption.
Future tests will be conducted on additional varieties of potato, arugula, and watercress. The researchers are trying to ensure that the plants will not absorb hazardous metals from the soil. Growing plants on a soil similar to that of Mars is only a small part of the effort that researchers do to find out if agriculture will be possible on Mars.
