The sacred monument which historians believe is the resting place of Jesus after he was crucified by the Roman soldiers was opened by a group of researchers after nearly 500 years.

According to British newspaper The Guardian, opening the grave the Savior is part of a restoration project, which will cost the Greek researchers no less than $4 million.

‘Marble plaques covering the tomb had been removed and I was amazed at the amount of materials placed beneath them. A series of long scientific surveys are going to be conducted, but in the end, we will be able to discover the stone, where the body of Jesus’, revealed archaeologist Fredrik Hiebert.

The tomb is located underneath a structure known as the Edicule, which will be restored by a team of scientists from the National Technical University of Athens.

Antonia Moropoulou is the supervisor of the scientific team and said that removing the marble plate, represented a ‘critical moment’ in their work.

‘The techniques we use to document this unique monument will allow the world to study our findings and to feel like they were actually in the tomb of Christ’, revealed Maropoulou.

The restoration project that includes a team of 50 experts started earlier this year.

The project was sponsored by a large number of influential personalities, including King Abdullah of Jordan and Mica Ertegun, the widow of the Atlantic Records co-founder Ahmet Ertegun. The project should be completed next spring.
