The ghost town, also known as ‘404’ is based in the north China, 100 kilometers from Jiayuguan.

Its unusual name comes from ‘404 Co. Ltd’, a company owned by the China National Nuclear Corporation.

‘404’ does not appear on any map and the main purpose of the establishment was to develop nuclear weapons.

‘404’ was like a second home for China’s top scientist and it was built in 1958. The researchers were transferred here and their first nuclear test held in 1964 represented a failure. The nuclear test was held in the Gobi Desert.

Although it only measures 4 square kilometers, ‘404’ has the most impressive underground world, which will be used in case of a nuclear war.

The ghost town has a municipal administration, a police station, their own TV station, a court and even a prison.

Today, ‘404’ has 1.000 residents. Most residents were transferred to Jiayuan.

According to Sixth Tone, in the 90’s, 100,000 residents lived in ‘404’.

Numerous housing blocks are standing empty and the doors are sealed with walls of brick. The city park, once a nucleus of after-work entertainment, is deserted.

According to Business Insider, in China, there are hundreds of completely empty cities. Although some of them are not inhabited, they have the most modern look.

Some neighborhoods are packed with skyscrapers and luxury apartments complexes but they are missing one thing: the people.

According to the Chinese government, these cities are part of a massive plan, meant to relocate 250 million Chinese citizens from rural areas into the city. Most apartments are ready to be occupied and the plan should be completed by 2026.
