New Delhi faces the most alarming level of air pollution. The registered value is 90 times higher than the maximum standard imposed by the World Health Organization.
The residents of the Indian capital were advised to stay indoors because the massive pollution might cause them severe respiratory problems.
The Indian Government highlighted that children, elders, those who already suffer from respiratory disorders and heart problems must follow the warning.
According to officials, the level of pollution increased significantly because of the season’s weak winds and countless garbage fires set alight to help people stay warm.
‘Last night, the pollution reached its highest level, which is very serious. You can see and feel that visibility is extremely low and the fog is suffocating’, said Anumita Roychowdhury from the Centre for Science and Environment.
According to a UNICEF report, over 300 billion children worldwide are exposed to a high level of pollution, much higher than the standards recommended by the World Health Organization.
620 million of these children live in South Asia, especially in northern India.
Unlike adults, children are more vulnerable to pollution because they breathe two times more air than an adult, while their brain and their immune system are still under full development.
New Delhi is the most polluted city in the world and the quality of the air is getting worse, especially this time of year.
In the Indian capital, the figures are alarming and their health is exposed to a great danger
