After only ten years after Kate McWilliams took the skies as a teenager air cadet, she has proved that she is a real high flier after becoming the youngest commercial pilot in the world at the early age of 26.
The 26-year-old who is a rising star of EasyJet’s crew budget airline was promoted to captain after being the first officer, which is usually achieved by pilots which are much older than that.
One spokesman stated that they believe she is the youngest captain in the world to fly a commercial airline.
After she took up flying the air cadets when she was only 13, the young lady made her first alone flight when she was 16 and went on training as a pilot at her 19th birthday.
She declared that she got quizzed about her young age by passengers and cabin crew almost daily, most being ‘impressed’ to find out that she has tracked very fast her way to the cockpit.
Kate said: ‘Personally I don’t think my age matters. I’ve been through the same training and passed the same command course as every other captain so I’ve proven myself capable regardless of my age.’
‘I do now get asked how old I am on an almost daily basis which didn’t use to happen when I was the first officer. Usually, that question comes from the cabin crew but sometimes passengers ask too.’
‘When I tell them I’m 26, most people are pleasantly surprised and impressed with my achievement at such a young age.’
Also, she is one of the few women that were promoted higher than the rank of the first officer.
There are only 5per cent female commercial pilots, easyJet announcing last year that there is an initiative to double the number of new entrants for females up to 12per cent over the next two years.
