Britain should not be given the special privilege to exit the common market during the negotiations in the European Union, said the European Central Bank President Mario Draghi.

‘Any outcome should be achieved on the assumption that all participants in the discussion are subject to the same rules,’ said the President of the ECB to the European Parliament in a speech on Monday.

‘It’s hard to imagine that a settlement would be perceived as discriminatory and could play a positive role in the stability of the European Union,’ he added.

From the Brexit referendum on 23 June, the UK government has tried to gain access to the common market without accepting all the conditions, particularly those relating to the free movement of people.

Poland, the largest exporter of workers in the UK, joined last week a chorus of voices from Eastern Europe, stating that they will use their veto in any deal that would erode the rights of its citizens to work in the Community.

Draghi said that while the ECB has no formal role in the Brexit negotiations it can speak as an adviser. He also noted that the central bank has jurisdiction over the payment system and might need to change the legal framework for union markets.

‘The Europeans ask the institutions to bring tangible benefits to their daily life,; he said in Brussels. ‘The actions taken by national governments must bring growth to reduce unemployment and to empower individuals and provide protection to the most vulnerable,’ he also added.
