The purpose of cosmetics and toiletries is to make us look good and feel clean. They are used safely by millions of people of all ages worldwide. While many people have no problem, mild rashes and irritation can be quite common and under-recognised and irritant and allergic reactions may occur.

The allergy to makeup or other cosmetic products is actually called contact dermatitis.

The allergic reactions appear immediately or within 48 hours after you apply the product.

‘The skin turns red and becomes itchy. If a certain product caused dermatitis, the affected area becomes thick and cracks’, stated Romanian dermatologist Viviana Iordache.

If the skin is not very affected, these reactions disappear spontaneously but you must stop using the product which triggers the allergy.

When the allergy becomes really severe, the affected area is not the cause of the allergic reaction and appears because the disease was untreated or we continued to apply the allergen on our skin.

The winter is right around the corner and in order to maintain our skin moisturized and makeup-ready we must use a hydrating cream and an emollient.

If you have a complexion with rosacea, scars or inflated pores, the season for laser treatment starts now.

Allergic reactions involve the body’s immune system which is meant to fight against infections, but occasionally get the wrong target – in this case, an ingredient of the cosmetic. In order to develop an allergy, you have to be exposed to the allergen more than once, and usually repeatedly.
