‘Warplanes from the worldwide anti-jihadi coalition carried out four airstrikes today against Syrian forces surrounded by the Islamic State group in the Deir Ezzor air base’, said the Russian army in a statement.
There wasn’t any immediate confirmation coming from the Pentagon.
The Syrian military calls in a statement the incident as a ‘serious and blatant attack on Syria and its military’ and ‘firm proof of the U.S. support of Daesh (IS) and other terrorist groups’.
‘Straight after the coalition’s strikes, IS militants launched an offensive’, the statement said, adding that a “fierce fighting against the terrorists” followed nearby.
It stated that the alleged attack pointed out that the United States and its allies are not in actually interested to fight against terrorism.
A spokesman for the Russian Defense Ministry said that 62 Syrian soldiers have been reported killed during the airstrike, which was carried out by two A-10s and two F-16s.
The Observatory declared that the Russian jets were conducting bombing there at the same time, that fighters from the Islamic State took control of the army positions in Jebel Tharda soon after the strike and that clashes had followed.
It stated that the raids allowed the IS to come close on Syrian troops from the area.
Russian President Vladimir Putin questioned on Saturday the United States commitment to the unstable, cease-fire lasting for a week already, suggesting that Washington was not ready to break with ‘terrorist elements’ against Assad’s forces.
If the strikes have been a targeting mistake, the ministry declared that the bombings were the evidence of the stubborn refusal from Washington to coordinate its own Syrian military action with the Russian Federation.
