The Jihadist Islamic State (IS) group is determined to use chemical weapons and will likely use them as Iraqi government forces are advancing towards Mosul, said on Monday a spokesman for the Pentagon.
A week ago, a missile struck, which was supposed to have had a chemical load, the Qayyara military base, where US troops stationed the agency recalls. The first tests showed that it was mustard gas, but later evidence proved inconclusive, navy captain Jeff Davis, spokesman for the Department of Defense in Washington told the press.
He said that IS has only rudimentary possibilities of turning into a weapon the bladder irritating substances. Usually, the Islamist militants used a mixture of chemical powder and oil, which leave similar characteristics.
‘It is generally not a lethal concentration. It is more an irritant one, but, I repeat, I do not consider this militarily significant,’ Davis said.
According to him, the mustard gas used in World War I was more dangerous, but the Iraqi and the US forces need to be prepared for attacks with chemical weapons. The US soldiers have the training and equipment required and act accordingly to prepare and equip the Iraqi troops.
The Pentagon announced that it had sent to Iraq over 50,000 gas masks, of which 40,000 are intended for Iraqi security forces.
According to the Iraqi Kurdistan autonomous region government, the Islamic State launched fifty mortar shells over cities like Gweyr and Makhmur placed southwest of Erbil. About forty of these explosions released a white powder and a black liquid, said then Business Ministry of Peshmerga.
