It has been revealed that fake British passports, exam certificates, and driving licenses are being sold to criminals with the help of the dark web.

According to an investigation by The Times which was undercover, documents that include utility bills and GCSE certificates are being sold on hidden internet websites.

Experts are warning that such websites, also known as the dark web, are a goldmine for criminals and are also posing a significant threat to security, the forged passports are known to be sold for only £800.

The criminals are even able to access bank accounts, make loans or obtain identification papers in the victims’ name by simply combining bank statements, bills and pay slips with special photographic ID.

Someone can only access the dark web by invitation through a secure web browser, which will open up a website that is usually unavailable on the internet.

The experts revealed the easy ‘scary’ way in which criminals can conduct now such operations.

From the University of East London, Sin Wee Lee, who is responsible for the investigation, said for The Times:

‘It’s scary that it’s so easy for anyone to organize and buy stuff to be sent to their home.’

‘It’s so easy to get a username and account and start buying.’

Deep Web, Deepnet, Invisible Web and Hidden Web, whatever you want to call it, is part of the WWW (world wide web) that is not indexed by search engines like Google, Bing or Yahoo. To access the Internet is not as easy as for visible sites (Facebook, Imgur, Ebay, and so on).

It should not be mixed with track down – computers that can’t be accessed through the internet or track down file sharing networks – which are just a small part of the Deep Web. Long known as the Deep Web, it is used by criminals for illegal transactions.
