A candidate for mayor and his bodyguard were killed, while a federal state deputy governor was seriously injured in an armed attack on an election rally in the Brazilian city of Itumbiara on Wednesday, officials said, says DPA news agency.

The gunman opened fire at a rally in Itumbiara, south-west of the capital Brasilia, before being shot dead by security guards.

The attacker, whose motive remains unclear, was later identified as a municipal official in Itumbiara.

Brazilians go to the polls on Sunday in municipal elections, considered to be a test of popularity for the country’s new president Michel Temer, reminds the DPA.

Brazil, officially the Federative Republic of Brazil (República Sound Federal do Brasil), is a federal republic made up of 27 federal units, the Federal District and another 26 states. The country is divided administratively into 5564 municipalities. In 2008 it had a population of 189 612 814 inhabitants and an area of 8,511,965 km², occupying 47% of the South American continent. Compared with other countries, Brazil ranks fifth after the population and the same position after surface. Being a new economic power in the world and the largest in Latin America, Brazil has today a great international influence, both regionally and globally. Also, about 15-20% of global biodiversity is concentrated here, examples of this wealth are the Amazon Forest, Pantanal, and Cerrado.

Brazil is today a leading political and economic country in Latin America, although the quality is partly disputed by Argentina and Mexico who oppose the intention of Brazil to obtain a permanent seat on the Security Council of the United Nations, the social and economic problems currently preventing Brazil to effectively make use of regional power.
