North Carolina governor decreed a state of emergency after the second night of protests in the city of Charlotte, which started after a black man was shot dead by the police, Reuters reports online.
Charlotte city Police Chief Kerr Putney initially said one person was shot during the protest and died, but local officials then announced on Twitter that she was hospitalized in a critical condition.
‘We tried to disperse the crowd. I was very patient, but then they became very aggressive, throwing bottles at the police, so it’s time to restore order,’ said Putney for Fox News.
The protest erupted on Tuesday after the police shot dead a black man, Keith Scott, who, according to them, was armed and refused to drop his weapon. Family and witnesses claim that he had a book in his hand and not a weapon.
According to the brother of the victim, whom the police shot dead, Scott was undercover and not in uniform.
‘He was waiting to take his son from school and the police were not wearing the uniform, it was undercover, it only drew attention to himself, they shouted out that he has a gun and shot him. I think they shot him four times, I’m not sure, but he is dead, “said Keith Lamont’s brother, Scott.
The police statement noted that the man was armed and a gun was recovered from the scene of the incident. The Police Department was searching for a suspect when they found an armed person came out of a vehicle.
Governor Pat McCrory said he had done so at the request of the police chief in Charlotte, sending National Guard and state troops to support the local forces.
