Although Leonardo DiCaprio only won an Oscar for the first time, this year, he has another statuette to grace his mantelpiece.
The Best Actor award won by Marlon Brando for On the Waterfront, that went missing sometime before the actor’s death back in 2004, now sits in a place pride on DiCaprio’s mantel.
‘It would be great to get it back,’ said the late actor’s archivist.
Leo, who earlier this year was finally awarded an Oscar for the Revenant, was given the statuette as a present by his friends at the Red Granite Pictures scandal-hit, wrote the Hollywood Reporter.
Until now, after almost two decades of numerous nominations, DiCaprio’s failure to win became something of a constant joke at the awards.
The Titanic star received in November 2012 Brando’s Oscar as a present for his 38th birthday.
The Oscar is said to have been acquired back in 2012 for an amount close to $600,000 through a memorabilia dealer from New Jersey.
It is purported that the dealer was Ralph DeLuca, who meet the actor thanks to their vintage movie posters shared love.
The company that produced DiCaprio’s movie, The Wolf of Wall Street, was started by the stepson of Najib Razak, the Malaysian Prime Minister, who is at the center of a 1MBD embezzlement inquiry worth $3billion.
One of the estate trustees of Brando, Mike Medavoy, who also produced DiCaprio’s Shutter Island, stated that the actor didn’t care very much about his awards.
‘He didn’t think awards were that important, ask Sacheen Littlefeather (an activist for the civil rights that accepted the best actor Oscar for the film The Godfather for Brando).’
One of Brando’s assistants also agreed to state that he never displayed his Oscars, and even gave them away. She is claiming that she had his Godfather Oscar in one of her desk drawer which is sitting there for several years now.
The Academy made no comments about the Oscar that is in DiCaprio’s possession.
