The South Korean and the US navies had a demonstration of force in the Sea of Japan this Monday, which is the latest in a row of military displays probably in response to North Korea’s ballistic missiles and nuclear warheads testing.
The exercises on Monday showed the US missile destroyer USS Spruance guided to join ships, planes and submarines from the navy of South Korea in the east waters of the Korean Peninsula.
During the joint drill, though, a helicopter from South Korea with three people in it fell into the sea, said the Navy of South Korea.
Not long after the takeoff, a distress signal was issued by the helicopter, just before it disappeared from the radar, said the statement. The forces nearby have been distributed to find the helicopter.
This was a first for the U.S. and South Korean vessels to operate together so close to the east waters of North Korea, said a US Navy official. The ships have been armed with precision, long-range and land-attack cruise missiles, added the official.
The show of force of the Navy was followed by the flight of US Air Force B-1 bombers last week, across the Demilitarized Zone, which was the closest and the most powerful, tested for combat heavy bombers which had ever flown over the line that separates North Korea from South Korea, said another U.S. military source.
That flyover was followed by the announcement of North Korea of what they claim to have been a rocket engine successful test.
At the beginning of the month, B-1 planes flew over the Osan Air Base, situated south of the South Korean capital, which was a response to the fifth test of nuclear warheads from North Korea, a test that showed that Pyongyang is ready to have warheads on missiles.
