The UAE announced a major shift, saying it will take in 15,000 refugees from Syria during the next five years. There are about 250,000 Syrians that live in the UAE now, but not under the refugee status.

The minister of state for international cooperation, Reem Al Hashemi spoke at an UN summit about refugees when the plan was announced, saying ‘we must all do our part’.

‘Ultimately, we must offer a source of hope for displaced persons that allows them to maintain dignity, return home, reintegrate themselves into their societies, and rebuild their countries and their lives,’ she said.

This way the UAE will be the first GCC state to announce an important plan allowing asylum for Syrians as refugees than as residents. There are also countries that didn’t accept any refugees from Syria yet from which we can name Japan, South Korea and Singapore.

There are almost 5 million people from Syria that have registered or are waiting to register with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees ever since the conflict in Syria started.

Reem Al Hashemi did not give any exact plans on how the Syrians are going to be housed or how much support will be given for them, but she said instead that ‘the UAE believes that we must not just meet the basic needs of refugees, but we also maintain their dignity and offer hope for their future’.

‘Five years ago, before the Syrian crisis erupted, 115,000 Syrians lived and worked in the UAE, joining more than 200 different nationalities and ethnicities that make up the tapestry of our diverse society and whose active and significant contributions are a clear rebuttal to the global wave of xenophobia. Since then, we have welcomed more than 123,000 Syrians,’ she also added.
