U.S. President Barack Obama Arrived in Tel Aviv for Shimon Peres’ Funeral

The American state leader arrived in Tel Aviv on Friday morning to attend at the at Shimon Peres’ funerals in Jerusalem.


The presidential aircraft Air Force One landed at local time 8:00a.m. on the Ben Gurion International Airport, which is located at 10 kilometers east of Tel Aviv.


Barack Obama was accompanied by the US Secretary of State John Kerry. In addition, the U.S. President will hold a speech and he will lead a delegation of 32 American diplomats, including former state leader Bill Clinton, Democratic Bob Case and Senator Nancy Pelosi.


The rest of the group mostly includes representatives of the Democratic Party and three Republican congressmen and President George W. Bush’ former security adviser Stephen Hadley.


The leader of the Palestinian National Authority, Mahmoud Abbas will attend the funerals of the former Israeli President and Prime Minister as well.


The Palestinian President has not traveled to Jerusalem for an official visit for some years now.


The Palestinian and the Hebrew people are known for their tense relationship and their on-going political conflicts. Although Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated they are prepared to have a one-one-one meeting, their acid and disturbing exchange of replicas prevented its organization.


Shimon Peres was the last survivor from the three winners of the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1994 when he was rewarded for his efforts to establish peace in the Middle East after he initiated a Palestinian autonomy and offered hope for resolving the eternal conflict in the region.


Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin was assassinated in 1995. Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat did not attend his funeral for security reasons but paid a visit to his widow. Yasser Arafat died in 2004.
