A young woman from Delhi was repeatedly stabbed in full view of the public by a man who was accused of stalking her for a year or more. The shock of the killing was increased because many people passing by failed to take any action. Divya Arya from BBC Hindi found anger and grief at the family home of the victim.

The small building in which Karuna Prajapati was living on the third floor placed in the north part of Delhi, in the Burari area, was surrounded by hundreds and hundreds of people. Rambeti Prajapati, her grieving mother, was sitting with a crowd of ladies on the first floor. Her face was drawn and looked dazed.

‘I have no more tears to shed,’ she said. However, around her, there was a lot of weeping but in the same time a lot of anger.

‘The police just don’t take our complaints seriously,’ said one woman. There are others with similar views as well, recounting cases where they tried to approach the police about harassment cases.

The conversation is inevitably turning towards the suspect, who is identified as being Surendra Singh Malik, locally known as Aditya. The CCTV footages show Ms. Prajapati being repeatedly stabbed by her attacker before he started hitting her in the head using a rock, also kicking her body has outraged and shocked the Indians.

The man was taken into custody by the locals who said that they caught him when he was trying to escape. He has been sent to prison now for a number of four days, further investigation pending.

‘We knew him very well because his mobile top up shop was right next door to our bag repair shop. We were very friendly with him, and he would even come to our house for meals,’ said Mrs. Prajapati.

‘Aditya and Karuna became very good friends and would spend time together, with Aditya even teaching her how to use a computer.’
