Boris Johnson has been slapped by Theresa May the night before after he suggested that Britain has a chance of being out of the European Union by the end of 2018.

The Foreign Secretary stated that Article 50, which is the two-year normal mechanism in order to be able to quit the Brussels club, which will be invoked at the beginning of next year.

In the comments that took the other ministers by surprise, he added that the process doesn’t need to take the whole 24 months.

In some wide-ranging remarks that were made during a visit to New York, he also stated that it was ‘cobblers’ that the UK may not get a deal for free trade if it would end the free movement of workers from the EU.

‘They would have us believe that there’s some automatic trade-off between what they call access to the single market and free movement of people.’

‘Complete baloney, absolute baloney. The two things have nothing to do with each other and we should go for a jumbo free trade deal and take back control of our immigration policy,’ Johnson said.

Going much further than No 10 has already done, he hinted as well at a new system on immigration in which the visas will be able to be exchanged for trade deals.

An immense stir was caused at Westminster because of his comments but delighted at the same time those campaigners that are pro-Leaving, wanting to exit the European Union as soon as possible. His candor though earned from Theresa May an immediate rebuke towards him.

‘The decision on when to invoke Article 50 is a decision for the Prime Minister and nobody else. She will decide,’ said a No 10 source.
