The heartbreaking footage was released on the Internet a few days ago. A devastated two-year-old child was crying desperately and begging her mother to wake up.
The woman fainted after an overdose, leaving her little girl stranded in the Family Dollar supermarket from Lawrence, Massachusetts.
The clip released by the Massachusetts police generated a massive revolt on the Internet. Mostly, because of the child, who probably remained traumatized and because no one tried to help them.
‘It’s very disturbing to see someone obviously in the matter of addiction where it overtakes someone where they’re not able to take care of their child, leaves their child vulnerable.’, stated the Lawrence Police Chief James Fitzpatrick.
According to Fox 25, the mother took a heroin overdose or a narcotic like fentanyl. The mother needed two doses of Narcan in order to get back on her feet. Apparently, the police officers who searched her found baggies with drugs residues in her handbag.
The mother of one was identified as 36-year-old Mandy McGowen. She is originally from Salem, New Hampshire and she was charged with child endangerment, reports Fox 25.
The two-year-old was taken into custody by the Department of Children and Families.
After she was questioned by the authorities, the woman was still under the influence and she told them she just fell asleep.
The incident occurred in the store’s toy aisle Sunday morning.
Police told WBZ-TV that in about 10 percent of the drug use cases they respond to, children are present.
