The European Commission ensures that by the middle of the next year there will be no more roaming charges within the European Union.
The EU executive returns on such a proposal aimed at limiting the period to 90 days without roaming. This variant has been criticized by MEPs who campaigned consistently for the complete abolition of the roaming charges.
In the new version, the 90 days disappear, but European Commission officials announced that mobile operators will be able to be protected against abuses, for those who subscribe cheaper in some countries but actually live in countries with more expensive services. These may be applied for additional charges of 4 euro cents per minute of talk time, 1 euro cent for SMS and 85 euro cents for a megabyte of data.
Most of Europeans that are traveling within the EU are only doing it for a few weeks every year.
If the travel habits of the Europeans kept that until now, the service providers will survive. The idea of giving up roaming charges is so popular that all operators are interested in providing such packages, Andrus Ansip said, the European Commission Vice-President for the Digital Market.
By December, the European Commission will present a legislative proposal that will be approved in member countries so that from mid-June 2017 the roaming charges could become history.
The easiest way to explain roaming is: when traveling abroad you can still use your mobile phone. You can call and be called, you can send and receive text messages (SMS) or you can download songs and read your emails.
Outgoing calls, SMS, and data services are operated by a foreign network because normally your home provider does not operate in that foreign country. The foreign operator for this service charges certain fees for the operator at home, which you are then billed to you.
