The EU intends to massively strengthen the border control. Those who want to enter its territory will be forced either to register or apply for a visa, says Deutsche Welle. The objective is better security. The EU citizens will be spared.
Australia has such a system for a long time now and the US as well since 2007: an electronic entry for travelers who do not need a visa. Now the EU wants to implement such a system to have a better record of those who enter and leave the block.
In the United States, online registration system is known under the name of ESTA. In Europe, it will be called “Etias” (European Information and Travel Authorization System). Currently, the European Commission conducted a feasibility study to determine how to install Etias in hundreds of airports and border crossings. The legislative process will be launched later during the year.
As with the American system, those who don’t need a visa to the EU will have to register online. A fee will be charged for the process. According to the EU officials, this could be between 13 and 50 euros.
Given the current level of passengers from non-EU countries which do not require a visa, about 30 million people, would generate revenues of between 390 million and 1.5 billion euros per year.
The number of those who do not need a visa but will have to pay this fee could rise considerably in the coming years. After the Brexit, millions of Britons that want to come to the EU will also have to register. The same could happen between the Turks and Ukrainians if the EU will allow them to travel without visas.
