Sidda is a male elephant that is 45-year-old, with one blind eye, a broken leg and bruised all over the place which is lying in the waters of Manchanabele dam for a coulpe of nights now.

The elephant strayed near the Uddandanahalli village two weeks ago, when the people of the village chased him away. On the run, panicked, Sidda fell for 10 feet making his front right leg break.

Although injured, he found a way to Savandurga Forest Range where he has been stuck in the waters of the Manchanabele dam, which is around 45km far from Bengaluru, being unable to be budged.

The veterinary from Bengaluru and Mysuru went the spot and prescribed medicine for the elephant which still continued showing signs of discomfort. Forest Department officials said that the animal prefers to stay in water probably in order to relieve the pain. Officials stated that the elephant has scars on its trunk and some pellet injuries on its body.

‘This has made it difficult for us to treat the ailing elephant. We have been feeding it jowar, bananas and other food items, laced with medicines,’ said a forest official.

The efforts in tranquilizing the animal didn’t make any progress as doctors are concerned that the animal has a weak health. Officials will try and evaluate the tusker’s health and will plan to relocate it in a week.

Speaking to Express, the Deputy Conservator of Forests D Manjunath, stated that the department is taking all the necessary procedures to make sure that Sidda is rescued.

‘There are many factors to consider for the rescue operation,’ he added.

If the relocation of the elephant is a success by this week, Sidda is most likely to be shifted to Bannerghatta National Park, which is near Bengaluru.

The staff laced ragi balls filled with medication ‘but the animal is so intelligent. He would only pick the ragi balls that did not have medicines in them. Now we feed him bananas mixed with medicines,’ said a Forest Department staff.
