The Germany authorities created the grimmest virtual reality program in the world, designed for helping to prosecute the last of the surviving Nazi war criminals which were employed in the death camp gulag of the Third Reich.

The Auschwitz 3D version is amazingly realistic and is meant to give the feeling for the one that looks at it that they are indeed in the complex Poland occupied by Nazis where more than 1.1 million people have been murdered.

It technicians from Bavarian State Criminal Office developed it. The attention to detail enhanced when viewed:, victims are guided into gas chambers, the crematoria smoke and the people executed by a firing squad or hanged.

‘It has often been the case that suspects say they worked at Auschwitz but didn’ t really know what was going on,’ said Jens Rommel, head of the federal office that investigates Nazi war criminals.

‘Legally, the question is about intent: must a suspect have known that people were being taken to the gas chambers or shot? This model is a very good and very modern tool for the investigation because it can help answer that question.’

Ralf Breker, digital imaging expert, who is working for the Bavarian crime authorities, is the one who designed the simulation that brings the worst place on earth to life.

‘To my knowledge, there is no more exact model of Auschwitz,’ said Breker, 43.

‘It is much, much more precise than Google Earth. We use the most modern VR goggles on the market. When I zoom in, I can see the smallest detail.’
