Rwanda launched today in the presence of President Paul Kagame, the first national drone delivery service in the world, during a special ceremony organized in the Muhanga district.
The Government of Rwanda will use the drones to carry blood transfusions from 21 centers located in the western region of the country.
The drones and the delivery services will be operated by Zipline, a tech company based in California. In the first weeks, the drones will carry only blood.
However, UPS and Gavi – Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization – in collaboration with Zipline are hoping to expand the supply of health services and vaccines.
‘The drones are very useful, both economically and in mostly in the health industry. We are excited to launch this innovative technology’, stated President of Rwanda Paul Kagame.
In poor countries, the access to medical products and services meant to help and save lives is cumbered by the poor infrastructure.
Unfortunately, the authorities do not have the possibility to deliver necessary medicines in rural and remote areas, due to lack of transport, communication, and an adequate distribution network.
In Rwanda, postpartum hemorrhage is the most common cause of death among pregnant women. Blood must be stored and transported at a certain temperature and the number of blood groups is multifarious the transfusion clinics have in stock all the necessary blood.
The national program delivery drone allows transfusion centers in the western area of the country to place emergency orders via SMS. Orders are received at the Zipline base.
