The Croatian conservative HDZ party chairman, Andrej Plenkovic, was hired on Monday to establish an atmosphere of tolerance in Croatia, where the previous government was accused it entails the society to drift to the right, according to AFP.
The new government will focus on the economy and will work with all political partners to create an atmosphere of tolerance in society and avoid any division, they said on Monday after they obtained from President Kolinda Grabar Kitarovic a mandate to form the Croatian government.
Andrej Plenkovic moderator, a former diplomat of 46 years old who took over the leadership of his party – in July – at the expense of nationalist hard-line supporters, thwarted the Social Democratic opposition outpacing forecasts in early elections in September. But since his party has obtained the absolute majority in the Parliament, he had to negotiate with other parties to form a coalition government.
The Croatian parliament would meet on Friday to examine its investiture, but – according to the president – Andrej Plenkovic has the support of 91 of the 151 deputies.
After only six months of existence, the previous government – all supported by a coalition led by HDZ – fell in spring eroded by internal dissensions, repeated debates on minority rights and accusations of revisionism on the role of Croatian Ustashe during the de- WWII.
Croatia must be a modern European country, where minority rights and human rights will be respected, said Monday Andrej Plenkovic.
Currently, Croatia – an EU member since July 2013 – is to engage painful economic reforms in a context of strong unemployment (13%, a young person out of three) of an inefficient administration and a prominent public debt.
