Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has criticized the European Union on Monday, saying the bloc has not kept its promise to provide $3 billion aid for migrants as part of a bilateral agreement intended to curb the arrival of refugees in Europe, reports Reuters.

‘The year is coming to an end,’ Erdogan stated in a conference in Ankara. ‘They (Europeans) promise but do not keep their word,” said Erdogan.

The agreement reached in March between Turkey and the European Union has significantly reduced the flow of illegal migrants entering the European Union from Turkey.

Thus, in March, the EU has committed to provide Turkey with $3 billion in 2016 and 2017 and another 3 billion later, in exchange for the Ankara collaboration, which had to stem the influx of illegal migrants and refugees to Europe.

The European Commission said that the payments to Turkey under the agreement are based on projects, not being about a single payment.

As regarding the accession to the European Union, it will open a new chapter of negotiation, and in terms of European financial aid, after the exhaustion of the three billion already promised to Turkey for the Syrian refugees, the EU will mobilize another three billion.

In Turkey, there are currently about 2.7 million Syrian refugees. The main fear now is that migrants will seek to address alternative routes to reach Western Europe.

Turkey has opened its doors, without making any distinction, to more than 2.5 million displaced Syrians and Iraqis, until now, all the expenses they have committed exceed nine billion dollars,’ said the Turkish President.
