The British ambassador in Saudi Arabia is now the first senior diplomat that converted to Islam and completed the pilgrimage to Haj.
The 60 years old Simon Collis said that he decided to convert to the Muslim religion after he spent almost 30 years in Islamic societies’.
With five children of his own, he was pictured in the white Ihram garments that are worn to the pilgrimage to Mecca happening every year, one that every Muslim has to make at least once in a lifetime.
He is married to a Syrian woman called Huda al-Mujarkech. Collis previously served as the British ambassador in Syria between the years 2007 to 2012, when the diplomatic relations between the UK and the regime of President Bashar al-Assad broke down.
He served in a number of Middle Eastern countries, including turns as the ambassador of Qatar and Iraq and some senior diplomatic positions in Yemen, United Arab Emirates, Tunisia, and India.
It is understood that Mr. Collis converted to Islam discretely in 2011, at a short period of time before he had to marry his wife Huda.
“In short, I converted to Islam after spending three decades in Muslim societies and after I married Huda”, said the diplomat.
Simon Collis has praised the Saudi Princess Basmah bint Saud and the activist Fawziah Albakr.
“Praised be God,” he wrote on the social platform Twitter.
“My special congratulations to the ambassador and his wife,” wrote the Saudi princess.
He is also the first British ambassador who took part in the Haji pilgrimage.
