U.S. has granted American citizenship by mistake to at least 858 immigrants, who had deportation orders and natives from countries which represent a serious threat to the national security, reports Associated Press.

The balance sheet was published by the Department of National Security of the United States and suggests that some of the immigrants used fake names and birth dates in order to achieve U.S. citizenship from the Immigration Service. Although the situation is unacceptable, the authorities cannot take actions because their fingerprints are actually missing from the Immigration Service’s database.

According to the Department of National Security, the immigrants who obtained the papers were not identified yet, but one of the officials revealed that they are originally from countries that present a high threat to U.S. and where the immigration rate is at its highest.

These issues represent a major problem for immigration officials, who are now under probation. They claim an archive of the fingerprints was made after all, but the only problem is that is done on sheets of paper and not electronically.

Not even the American secret services are not able to help them because FBI’s immigration records are incomplete. Apparently, most of the files containing the fingerprints  during the immigration process were not shared with the Federal bureau.

U.S. Immigration Service employees are in the process of upgrading the electronic data and identifying each case of possible fraud.

The incredible discovery was made by the Department of Homeland Security’s office of inspector general, which released a report Monday on the incomplete fingerprint records and the mistakenly granted citizenships.
