The first beer pipeline in the world was inaugurated last week in Bruges by the historical Halve Maan brewery and a bottling factory from the region. The beer pipeline will start pumping beneath Bruges from September.
The pipeline measures approximately three kilometers and represents the best alternative for loading the beer trucks in the city. Until they came up with the pipeline idea, the truck drivers were struggling to enter on the narrowest streets in order to load the merchandise. Now, the pipeline is located in the brewery, right in the place where it was first installed, 500 years ago.
It’s a practical solution to the logistical nightmare of having trucks thundering daily through the narrow cobbled streets of a medieval town, the brewery said.
The pipeline is 3,2 kilometers long and reaches a 34 meters depth. The system reaches the under canals of the historical center of the city and is equipped with the latest technology in order to ensure the best quality of the beer and with its own cleaning system.
Almost 4,000 liters of beer are flowing through the pipeline in a single hour. The impressive quantity is enough to fill in 12,000 bottles.
The project was partly financed through a fundraising initiated by a crowdfunding organization, which raised more than 300,000 euros, setting a new record for crowdfunding in Belgium.
In addition, the historical center of Bruges, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, will benefit from a new traffic management system.
