A new study led by researchers at the University of Michigan indicates that intelligence plays an important role in determining skills related to chess.
The study provides the most conclusive evidence that cognitive abilities are related to performance skills, a topic widely debated by psychologists and theories contradicted by incontrovertible that rely on intensive training.
,, Chess is probably the most studied area of expertise research, evidence of the link between skills needed and cognitive chess are mixed, ” said Alexander Burgoyne, lead author of the study.
,, We analyzed half a century of research about intelligence and skill of chess and we found that cognitive skills are significant contributors to the individual differences in the qualifications required in chess, ” he added. The discovery was published in the journal Intelligence, the study examined skills in areas such as chess, music or sport.
,, When it comes to expertise, training and practice show two pieces of the puzzle, ” said Hambrick, associate professor of psychology. ,, After this study it was proved that intelligence is a piece of the puzzle, ” he added.
For in-depth study known as meta-analysis, researchers analyzed more than 2,300 articles written by experts about chess, looking in particular studies that include measurement of cognitive abilities (IQ) and chess skills (such as assessing Elo). The first installment included 19 studies in which 1,800 subjects participated.
Meta-analysis is the first attempt by scientists to systematically investigate the best scientific evidence, said Burgoyse.
In the study it was found that intelligence is skills related in chess, especially for novice players.
Hambrick offered another hypothesis, ,, Imagine that a genius can relatively easily learn to play chess, a person of average intelligence could learn much harder. The point is that practice and developed skills and knowledge can counter the average level of intelligence ”. This strategy is good for chess, he added, but does not have the same results in other daily activities.
