Erdogan Tayyip: ‘The US Shoud Not Harbor A Terrorist’

“The United States should not harbor a terrorist,” as the Muslim cleric Fethullah Gulen and its activities should be banned worldwide, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said in an interview with the Reuters news agency.

Gulen, who lives for nearly two decades in a self-imposed exile in the US, is accused by Ankara that it orchestrated the attempted coup in Turkey which took place in July, but the cleric vehemently denies these allegations.

the US authorities have announced that they will extradite Gulen if Turkey presents evidence to support the extradition request.

“If Washington is our strategic ally and partner in NATO (…) Then it should not leave a terrorist like Gulen to manage its organization, ” Erdogan said.

The Turkish leader also said that if necessary, the state of emergency declared after the coup could be extended after the first three months passing.

As about the negotiations on Turkey’s accession to the bloc, Erdogan accused the European Union to not fulfilling its obligations to Ankara.

“Turkey has kept its promises regarding the EU accession process (…) it’s a two-way path and the EU should fulfill its promises (…) the process wasn’t concluded (… ) I want the EU to be honest regarding this process, “the Turkish President said.

Ankara leader spoke about the situation in Syria, saying that Bashar al-Assad’s removal is the only way that allows the restoration of peace in the war-ravaged country. Turkey supports rebels fighting the Assad regime and houses about 2.7 million Syrian refugees.

“The future of Syria should be decided by its own people (…) Why this killer (Assad n.red.) Is supported by some countries?,” Erodgan said, adding that “Assad should not be part of the transitional period (…) world should find a solution that did not include Assad (…) Syria’s territorial integrity should be respected by other countries.”
